Browsing through my daily dose of news from the Rolling Stone’s RSS, I ‘ve come across a phenomenal project of artist collaborations. The Grammys have teamed up with Amir Bar Lev to produce a project that pairs a modern day successful electronic music producer/artist with some of the greatest musicians of various genres. These collaborations are all part of a documentary film to be released in early 2012 titled RE:GENERATION.
Each recording act will take place in a different location closely related to the respective genre of music. The first pairing, and probably my favorite, is between Skrillex and the remaining members of my all time favorite classic rock band, The Doors. The electronic music genius is going to do his best to spin out the Doors first new track of the 21st century out in L.A. In the Northeast, DJ Premier will be producing a classical track featuring the Berklee School of Music Orchestra and veteran Hip Hop artist Nas. In Nashville, electronic musician, Pretty Lights, will be producing a country song for Leann Rimes and Ralph Stanley. My all time favorite electronic music duo, The Crystal Method, went to Detroit, MI to record a Motown R&B song alongside Martha Reeves. Finally, in my hometown of New Orleans, Mark Ronson worked with Erykah Badu, the Dap Kings and Trombone Shorty to record a jazz song.
I can’t wait to watch this film to see the tension and hostility of clashing creative minds and hear the end results. I think the Grammys did a wonderful job of pairing complete opposites of the musical realm to work together on a common project. All of these artists are masters of their chosen field, and it will be a true test of their talents to see them pressured into creating something worth listening to outside of their comfort zone. The film will be a part of Grammy week next year and possibly screened at the Grammy museum.
